I love Fall. The colors, the food, the pumpkins, the boots, the chill in the air, gearing up for holiday shoots...I could go on and on. I'm always on the lookout for cool yet simple fall crafts...and this one fits the bill!
I did! and you can too!

The original craft by Better Homes and Gardens carved the pumpkin from the bottom and had eye and nose cut outs so that candlelight could glow thru, however, since I wanted the pumpkin to last longer, I decided not to carve the pumpkin. And since the white pumpkins I saw didn't have an "owl shape" I made ours with a perfectly shaped orange pumpkin from Plant Depot. (Have you been to their pumpkin patch? They have all sorts of cool pumpkins!)
Here's what you need: A pumpkin (for our next owl I'm going to try experimenting with different shapes and colors), several packets of sunflower seeds, (while I was at Plant Depot, I also picked up the packets of sunflower seeds to use for the eyes. I used four packets and had a few seeds left over for planting) two wood barbecue skewers--cut 2" from the pointy end, a seed or other object to use as a beak (I used an almond), glue gun, pencil and a small circular or oval shaped object to trace (an old pair of scissors worked great).
Step one: trace the circles onto the pumpkin where you would like the owl eyes.
Step two: Begin gluing the sunflower seeds onto the edge of the circle, continuing until a circle of seeds is complete. Then starting in the middle of two seeds on the bottom layer, glue another layer on top of that one.
Step three: Cut the wood skewers 1 1/2 to 2 inches above the point. Insert two of the skewers into the pumpkin for ears using the pointy end--then Glue 5 seeds as shown for the ears. (it's easiest to insert the wood first then glue the seeds on) Do the same for the feet, this time using only 3 seeds.
Step four: Glue on your bird's beak.
Step five: Find a perch for your bird! Whoo Whoo!
