How can I improve my photography?

It's one of the questions I get asked most--how can I improve my photography?  And I ask it of myself all the time--because just as with anything in life and whether you are a pro or just taking photos of your kids, if you aren't asking how to improve, you're not growing!

Here are 5 easy ways to up your game:

1.  Don't worry about the camera you are using.  If you were a gourmet cook, you'd be able to cook in any kitchen, right?  Just as in cooking, it's all about the vision--in photography, it's all about how you see things and what you do with that vision.  The earliest cameras were boxes with holes in them.  Hello!

2.  Try a new angle.  If you always stand in the same position, you'll basically get the same photo.  Don't take ten images of the same view, hoping it will be different.  Try a new angle.  Shoot from overhead, shoot from below, shoot from the side, closer to your subject, further from your subject...just move around!

3. Don't put your subjects facing direct sun.  What happens when you face the sun?  You squint.  Not pretty.  Horrible shadows.  Not pretty.  It's ok to ask or move your subject to better spot.

4.  Learn your camera.  No matter what camera you use, learn about it and what it is capable of.  Read the manual.  Take each function that you don't know about and challenge yourself to learn it by doing.  Don't let your camera do your thinking for you.  Which leads to....

5.  Use your camera everyday.  Shooting everyday (essentially practicing everyday) will be the fastest way to improve your photography.  It helps you to learn your camera and to develop your eye.  If you need suggestions, there are plenty of photo a day challenges out there.  Find one that interests you and shoot!
